Weekly Reflection

In our culture, philosophers are often portrayed as old, unfit men who have retreated from society and spend all their waking hours thinking deeply about life’s profound questions. If the Stoics were to see this stereotype, they wouldn’t have disagreed more.

The ancient Stoic philosophers were active members of society. They had responsibilities, people they needed to look after, problems to solve and lives to lead. Marcus Aurelius was the emperor, Seneca was a lawyer and playwright, and Epictetus was a teacher.
