Who was Musonius Rufus?
In mainstream Stoicism we mostly discuss the Big Three Stoics; Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius.
However, there were many other Stoics throughout antiquity, but the works of these three men make up the majority of what has survived. Most was unfortunately lost in history.
However, there are surviving fragments of a lesser-known Stoic, Gaius Musonius Rufus.
Rufus, a philosopher and teacher of the 1st century AD, showed unbreakable adherence to his principles throughout his life, and gained a reputation as the 'foremost stoic of his day' and even the ‘Roman Socrates’.
Here are three lessons we can learn from his life.
