Weekly Reflection
Marcus Aurelius was certainly not an armchair emperor. On one hand, he could’ve lived a hedonistic life in a villa away from responsibility, but he chose not to. For much of his life was spent on the front lines of the Roman Empire, as depicted in Ridley Scott’s film, Gladiator (which I highly recommend watching if you haven’t already).
He also believed in the importance of maintaining a strong physical condition by practicing hunting and sparring. In Book IV of Meditations, he writes an anecdote about a lesson he learned while sparring.
