Taming your emotions
In the English language, the word “stoic” is used to describe someone who shows no passion or feeling. Someone indifferent to pleasure and pain.
This modern definition has done a great disservice towards the actual philosophy of Stoicism. The Stoics were real people who felt real emotions just like us, trying to get a little better each day.
As Nassim Taleb has said, “Stoicism is about the domestication of emotions, not their elimination.”
Rather than eliminating emotions entirely, a Stoic seeks to develop tools to tame them when they do arise, to remain in control and not become possessed by them.
