Many of us are interested in philosophy not just to become wise, but for the reputation of being wise.
As social animals, we tend to find validation addictive. This can easily get us into trouble, leading us to spend our lives obsessing over how we are seen by others.
Epictetus noticed this pattern and believed that it was counter-productive to the pursuit of true wisdom.
