As much as we love Stoicism, we need to be careful not to become narrow-minded and deliberately ignore other sources of wisdom. Before the time of the internet, one of the most effective ways to communicate philosophy was through poetry. In fact, several passages in Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations are written beautifully, in a deeply poetic way. One of the most fascinating non-Stoic poets, was Rumi.
Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī, otherwise known as Rumi, was a 13th century Islamic scholar and poet who lived in present-day Tajikistan, and mainly wrote in Persian. His influence transcended national borders and ethnic divisions, and with his works being translated to several languages, he has been described as the “most popular poet.”
