In his Meditations, Marcus Aurelius repeatedly wrote about how we are all part of one giant interconnected cosmos, and that no action exists in isolation. Nobody can truly be 'self-sufficient' because our survival depends on events in the outside world, often out of our control.
As much as he believed we were social animals built for cooperation, our focus should be on the ruling reason in each of us, that is the master of its own affairs. "If this weren't the case," Marcus wrote, "the evil in someone else could become my harm, and God didn't mean for someone else to control my misfortune."
