When times get tough, one of the things that we often fall back on is hope. It's one of the most human qualities, to believe in a better future circumstance when the current one is not so good.
The Roman philosopher and former slave Epictetus saw this in his day to day life, and realized that it was a flawed approach to life. He didn't necessarily believe that hope was bad, but that we should never just hope in one thing, especially when it's out of our control.
Using the analogy of a ship and its anchor, he said:
